Jo is the Hñähñu word for mushroom or fungi. In this piece, Eileen carves and weaves into bark, resisting settler-imposed narratives and asserting Indigenous sovereignty through the presence of their own hands—dark brown, grounded, and unerasable.
Their hands become both reflection and symbol: of Land, of self-determination, of visibility. The fungi represent decomposition not as an ending, but as transformation—reminding us that, like in nature, endings are beginnings too. This work honors cyclical growth and the radical potential held in decay and regeneration.
